Travel in Color with Wander Piggy + Giveaway!

Back in the “old days” of travel, when every one had a camera with film, my husband and I made scrapbooks for each trip we took.  We would fill a binder with photos, notes, ticket stubs, hotel information, boarding passes, etc. We love flipping through these books and looking back at the wonderful memories and experiences we’ve accumulated.

However, now that we don’t even take a camera with us when we travel (we use our smartphone), we’ve let our practice of making scrapbooks fall by the wayside, and I do miss them.  Lucky for me, I found the perfect books to help me keep a tidy record of our travel memories: Wander in Colour trip planners and journals by Claudia Chan (aka “Wander Piggy“). I chose Wander in Colour with Cats for our last trip.

Overview of Wander in Colour with Cats

travelWander in Colour with Cats opens with pages to record information about you (contacts, medical, etc.), flights, hotels, packing, expenses, etc. I found the the “Suggested Topics” were great prompts for capturing the unique experiences I had on my trip. The rest of the pages are lined for you to record everything about your trip so you can keep and share your memories. These pages are interspersed with illustrations for coloring. A few pages at the end provide a bit of background on each of the coloring designs.

The author has created a set of videos to help you get the most out of your travel planner/journal, including this one about using the Trip Index:

Construction

travelWander in Colour is 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ and perfectly sized for stashing in a large purse, backpack or carry-on. The card-stock cover has a cute travel-themed, partly colored illustration that is also printed on the title page and ready for you to color.

With over 198 pages – numbered! yeah! – Wander in Colour is easy to color in without using a hard surface. The binding is glued tight, meaning even if you bend the book back upon itself you will have no fear of pages falling out. And you won’t want to remove any pages as this is a wonderful keepsake book.

The relatively smooth white paper is on the lighter-weight side, a tad heavier than copier paper. My results with various media were mixed: I found I got the best results with alcohol-based markers (I used BIC Markits), as there was minimal banding and the colors were nice and bright (although you will be wise to put a slip of paper behind the coloring page as these markers will bleed). My next favorite, Lolliz gel pens, looked great, but because they tend to be “juicy” the paper did buckle a bit. Water-based markers were wonderful as well, particularly as they didn’t “pill” like you would find on rougher paper.

For your writing, I recommend water-based fine-tips or “regular” writing pens or pencils.

Designs

travelThe illustrations in Wander with Colour with Cats are simple line drawings of cat-themed locations around the world, such as a scene from a cat sanctuary in Hawaii, a monument to homeless cats in Germany and a cat museum in Montenegro.

The illustrations do run into the gutter, however, so the tight binding means it can be a challenge to color in every little piece.

The line-work is thin but very sharp. Unlike other pages in the book, the reverse of each coloring page is blank so you don’t need to worry about ruining anything if you use markers. But do place a sheet of paper behind each coloring page if you use alcohol-based markers so you won’t have spotting onto the second-next page.

Difficulty

travelI found the designs in Wander in Colour to be very easy: no teensy-weensy details to worry about and choosing colors was easy – go wild!

Therapeutic Value

travelWhen traveling, I find taking a daily break to gather my thoughts, review my itinerary and plans, and rest my body does a world of good. Having this great book at hand was a wonderful tool to make sure this all happened during my trip.

At home, I went even further and printed some of my best pictures and glued them into pages in Wander in Colour (I used Glue Stick)  The pages were also great for saving miscellaneous paper memorabilia from my trip, including museum tickets, business cards for stores we loved, etc. .

So, not only did Wander in Colour provide a therapeutic coloring break during my trip, but if I feel down, just pulling out the reminder of my travels can lift my spirits, just as our old format trip scrapbooks.

Verdict

The Wander in Colour with Cats travel planner/journals offer structure, flexibility, and coloring pages for any trip, cat-related or not. The structure allows you to record important information, and to make sure you have all the details you need at your fingertips, without having to worry about charging a device or finding wireless access. The flexibility lets you use your creativity, so you can plan and capture your adventure the way you want to. And the coloring pages are perfect for those much-needed down-times when you are on vacation. I rate it 4★ out of 5★.
