Amazon Prime Day 2018 is coming on July 16th – are you ready to get the best deals?
What Is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day launched in 2015 as part of Amazon’s 20th birthday celebration, and it was a gigantic success: Amazon sold 398 products per second and saw higher revenues than on Black Friday.
In the 2017 Amazon Prime Day, Amazon saw a 60 percent increase in sales compared to 2016. As well, revenues were even higher than its 2016 Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
What Deals Can You Expect on Amazon Prime Day?
Last year, Amazon’s own products often had the best discounts. The Echo speaker price dropped by half to $89.99, while the smaller Echo Dot was given a $15 discount to bring the price down to $34.99. The Dot became the most-bought item of the day.
But it’s not just Amazon products that see bargain prices. In 2017, big-selling tech items included the TP-Link Wi-Fi Smart Plug, the Sony PlayStation 4, the Nintendo Switch, and the OnePlus 5 phone were all big sellers. Estimates suggest that on Amazon Prime Day 2017, Amazon sold 3.5 million toys, 200,000 dresses, 52,000 kitchen items, and 37,000 power tools.
Other categories where you may find some good deals:
Subscriptions: Amazon subscriptions like Amazon Music Unlimited, Audible, Kindle Unlimited, Prime Video, Prime Now, Pantry, and more (many are already available: see full details, below).
Gift Cards: If an Amazon gift card deal comes around, grab it! Amazon gift cards are as good as cash. Even if you don’t shop there yourself, it makes a perfect (discounted) gift for any occasion.
Amazon Warehouse: Amazon Warehouse sells pre-owned goods, both from Amazon themselves and from third party marketplace vendors. During previous Prime Days, there have been a general coupon code lowering the already discounted price by another 20%.
Book Coupons: I’ll bet you will see a coupon (or two) for books, in the $5 to $15 off range. This code should work on coloring books, art books, DIY, fiction, and more.
So, now that you know all about what you may find, how can you actually grab these deals?
1. Sign Up for FREE Amazon Prime Account
Only Amazon Prime members can take advantage of the massive discounts.
First and foremost: sign up for a free 30-day Amazon Prime trial.
A new membership to Amazon Prime regularly costs $12.99/month or $119/year. In addition to Prime Day deals, members receive access to Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Prime Music, free 2-day shipping, and many more Amazon Prime benefits.
Students can sign up for a free 6-month trial and then get 50% off 1 year of Prime ($59 per year) for up to four years. Students will get free 2-day shipping on all Prime Day deals.
As well, if you have an EBT or Medicaid card, you can also get a discount on your Prime membership after your free trial.
Of course, remember to cancel your trial before Amazon charges your credit card if you are not thrilled with all of the Prime benefits (which I am sure you will be!).
2. Bookmark Amazon’s Prime Day Hub Page
This page will be Amazon’s central Prime Day page. In addition to hosting current Prime Day deals, it will highlight the newest Lightning Deals. And you’ll want to keep your eye on Lightning Deals….
3. Monitor Lightning Deals
Lightning Deals are a standard part of the Amazon shopping experience for Prime members. Every day, Amazon offers a limited number of products at a massive discount. The quantity of any item is limited, and deals are only available for a short amount of time.
On Amazon Prime Day, there are usually additional Lightning Deals, sometimes hundreds available at one time. If you keep your eyes open, you might find a saving above and beyond the Prime Day discount.
And if the Lightning Deal you want sells out before you get a chance to get it into your cart, you can join a waiting list: if the people with the item in their cart don’t complete their purchase, it will automatically be offered to the folks on the waiting list.
4. Use Amazon Alexa for a Head Start
In 2017, Amazon gave voice shoppers a two-hour head start on new deals. During 2017’s Black Friday sale event, that increased to seven hours.
I expect Amazon will offer the same benefits during this year’s Prime Day. You just need to say “Alexa, what are your deals?” to enjoy the advanced notice. If you hear something you want, say “Alexa, add [item] to my cart.”
5. Use Amazon Assistant for Deal Notifications
Did you know that Amazon offers a browser extension that can help you with order tracking, product comparisons, and access to your various lists. Check out and download the FREE Amazon Assistant extension here.
From an Amazon Prime Day perspective, Amazon Assistant’s best feature is Watched Deals Notifications that will automatically notify when deals that you’re watching go live (for Chrome, Firefox 53.0+, and Opera browsers only).
6. Use the Amazon App on Your Smartphone or Tablet
The Amazon app is available for almost all smartphones and tablets. It makes it easier to receive notifications on Amazon Prime Day deals you are watching.
7. Check CamelCamelCamel for Price Histories
How do you know the price you see on Amazon Prime Day is really a good deal? We all know vendors and retailers can artificially increase prices ahead of a big sale, and some Amazon vendors are no different.
A great resource is CamelCamelCamel. You can enter the Amazon item’s URL or search for keywords and see how the price has changed over time.
If you see a steady rise in the item’s price in the weeks building up to Amazon Prime Day, you should probably avoid it.
8. Check Forums for Prime Day Deals
If you have the time, it’s worth hanging out in some dedicated Amazon Prime Day forums. The best subreddit will probably be /r/PrimeDay, but don’t expect to see much activity (there isn’t any as of this writing) until the day itself. There’s also a dedicated Amazon subreddit which is also worth watching.
Finally, check the threads on SlickDeals. It’s consistently one of the best sites for finding bargains on the web, and on Prime Day it gets super busy.
9. Look at Other Sellers’ Sites
Other retailers have been looking enviously at Amazon piling up sales records, and an increasing number are running their own sales on Prime Day in an attempt to grab some of the business.
Last year, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Nordstrom, and Dell had great discounts and some also offered free shipping. On Amazon Prime Day 2018, you may see Google, Newegg, Office Depot, and 1-800 Flowers join the list, along with several others.
So before committing to a purchase on Amazon, make sure you can’t find it cheaper on a competitor’s or manufacturer’s site.
10. Get Even More with a Credit Card!
Sign up for one of the Amazon Cards and get rewards or cash back on all of your Amazon purchases – including Prime Day purchases – all year long!
Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card
You’ll need to be an Amazon Prime Member to be a cardholder, and this card has no fee. When you are approved, you will start earning Amazon rewards everywhere you shop, including 5% rewards on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases. During Prime Day, the amount sometimes increases to up to 20% for certain categories. You can use the rewards you earn to pay for almost anything on Amazon.com.
Limited time bonus: When you are approved for the Card, you will receive a $70 Amazon.com Gift Card!
Amazon Prime members are upgraded to the Amazon Prime Store Card and can earn 5% back on all Amazon.com purchases. This is a no-fee card as well, and when approved you will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card!
11. Start Planning Your Amazon Prime Day Budget
Shopping responsibly is important. Events such as Prime Day are filled with temptation, and some folks may overspend and wake up with a head full of buyer’s remorse.
