Oil-Based Pencils
Harder cores that stay sharp longer. Excellent for fine details and less prone to breakage. Slightly less vibrant but more durable.
Popular brands: Faber-Castell Polychromos, Lyra Rembrandt
Watercolor Pencils
Can be used dry like regular pencils or activated with water for watercolor effects. Versatile and perfect for mixed media projects.
Popular brands: Derwent Inktense, Faber-Castell Albrecht DĂĽrer
What to Consider
- Pigment Quality: Higher quality = more vibrant, lightfast colors
- Core Hardness: Softer cores blend better, harder cores are better for details
- Color Range: Sets range from 12 to 150+ colors
- Lightfastness: Important if you plan to display your work
- Budget: Start with a mid-range set and upgrade as needed
Beginner's Tip
Don't feel pressured to buy the largest set! A quality 24 or 36-color set is perfect for starting out. You can always add individual colors or upgrade later as you discover your preferences.
